This was an internment camp for Japanese Americans following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It was quite distressing to see how we treated them calling them inmates and watching them from a guard tower. The racism towards them made me cry. There were storyboards explaining what used to be there. 7300 families including small children were sent there from their homes in California. The cemetery is beautifully done and honors the lives lost including those who died in the war (that’s right, they served the USA even though they lived at Amache. We were the only ones there at sunset and it was quite solemn. Recommend a visit should you ever find yourself out by Lamar. Hope history doesn’t ever repeat itself.
