Datil Well Recreation Area

We decided to leave Abiquiú even though we had another night paid for. Seems like there might be more interesting sites further south. We got so turned around in Santa Fe looking for Walmart (to replace our broken water container) and for a gas station that we lost about an hour. After Albuquerque and Socorro we headed west on Route 60.
Tonight we are in a lovely BLM campground outside Datil. The drive was a bit boring with not much to look at and pretty desolate communities. We wondered about the campground.
We passed the VLA (very large array) of radio antennas that are listening for aliens “out there.” Acres of them that are sometimes moved on a railroad track.
We are in site #9 although there really isn’t a bad site. And for $10 ( with our Senior Pass) you can’t beat it. Very quiet and clean. We wished we had arrived sooner and with more energy to explore this very interesting historic area.
Tomorrow we will be in City of Rocks outside silver city for three nights. We will be seeing friends formerly from salida and of course the sites. It will be good to be in one place for a few days.
We are traveling with our mascot, Clay the Pigeon who we found on one of our trips last year. We think he keeps us safe.
