Wildfires, the high cost of gas and family visits have kept us home this summer. We finally had enough and hit the road. We have no plans, no real destination and we’re stocked up for four days. As an experiment we left our bikes behind. Stay tuned on that decision.
We started over Cottonwood Pass which has such tremendous views! Now that the smoke from the wildfires has cleared we could almost see “forever”. We took a slow drive towards Almont taking in the sights. Taylor reservoir is shockingly low. The effects of the drought were certainly evident there.
We stopped at a couple of campgrounds but decided it was too soon to stop. We talked about going to Kebler pass outside Crested Butte but then remembered Cement Creek campground near South CB. That’s where we are tonight. $9 with our senior pass.
Once the dirt bikers finished riding past us, it was amazingly quiet and warm. We took a walk around the campground and then down to the creek. Simon really wanted to go in it but we didn’t want him to get wet. He’s doing ok for his 13.5 years.
Tomorrow we’ll head to Kebler and hopefully there will be a site in the campground for us. Or we’ll be boondocking which suits us just fine. It’s really nice to be outside in nature again.
